Today was Railroad Day in Sacramento. Members of the California Short Line Railroad Association met with many legislators to discuss the importance of freight rail in the Golden State. I invite you to join the conversation online using #CARailDay. Here are some rail facts and figures, as well as sample messages for sharing on Twitter or Facebook.
· 25 freight railroads operate across California’s 4,800 + track miles and haul over 162.3 million tons of freight across the state annually.
· The train accident rate has fallen 23% over the last decade.
· Railroads can move a ton of freight 479 miles per gallon of fuel, double what was possible in 1980.
· California has about 8,150 freight rail employees. Freight railroads support about 1.1 million jobs across the country.
· Today’s freight railroads use big data and smart sensors to spot patterns and predict problems before they happen.
· The typical locomotive, for example, contains supercomputers that can process a billion data points per second.

Freight railroads in California spare our overcrowded roads 9 million truck trips each year, saving taxpayers money and reducing greenhouse gases. #freightrailworks
Pleased to learn how railroads are using tech — using #BigData, #drones & #machinevisioning — to enhance safety & efficiency. #InfrastructureMatters
#DYK – freight railroads are operating tech that can remotely stop a train & prevent accidents on over 80% of miles w/ passengers or hazmat & will be at 100% by 2020. #railtech
